A&O Shearman supporting landmark GBP38 billion Sizewell C nuclear power station project
A&O Shearman is providing ongoing legal counsel for the development of the Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk, UK – a transformative GBP38bn project. Once operational, the 3.2-gigawatt facility is expected to deliver over 60 years of reliable, clean energy to approximately six million homes, while creating more than 10,000 direct jobs in the UK.

Since 2018, A&O Shearman has advised Sizewell C on all aspects of its supply chain and contracting strategy for the project, including the core design and technology contracts (reactor, turbine and safety systems) and the establishment of the civils works delivery alliance, a key component in ensuring the project’s successful execution.

A&O Shearman’s specialist nuclear energy team continues to be a key advisor to many of the biggest projects, transactions and disputes worldwide in the nuclear sector, including having advised on all three new nuclear giga-projects proposed and significantly progressed in the UK in recent years (Hinkley Point C, Wylfa Newydd and Sizewell C) as well as numerous giga and small module reactor (SMR) nuclear power projects globally.

“We are delighted to support this landmark project in support of the UK’s efforts to decarbonise its energy mix and bolster energy independence and security,” said Troy Edwards, A&O Shearman lead partner and sector lead of the firm’s energy and infrastructure practice. “Our involvement underscores A&O Shearman’s commitment to helping clients deliver complex, innovative solutions in the energy sector.”

The A&O Shearman team includes London-based Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure (ENRI) counsel Nick Jackson and Eleanor Milne, senior associates Lizzi Evans Beechinor, Harshil Arora, Ghazi AbuYounis, Katie Shorter, and Harry De Lacey; associates Senem Cilingiroglu, Oliver Foudah, Freya Clarke, Kamilla Marianayagam, Yan Wan Foo, Dylan Gaymer, and Flora Deverell; and consultants Mark Walker and Shaun Beaton.
