A&O Shearman is pleased to announce the promotion of senior associates Martin Bytčanek and Jakub Čech to the position of counsel, effective May 1, 2026.

These appointments reflect A&O Shearman’s long-term strategy to systematically strengthen the expertise of its Prague office in key practice areas, in particular real estate, M&A and intellectual property. They also recognise the significant professional contributions of both lawyers and their ability to deliver practical, high‑quality advice to clients.

Prokop Verner, managing partner of the Prague office, commented: “Promoting talent from within is a core priority for us. Both Jakub and Martin have consistently demonstrated not only technical excellence but also the leadership qualities and commercial insight that our clients value most. Their appointment is a testament to their exceptional legal expertise, dedication to our clients, and the significant role they play in our firm’s ongoing success. I have full confidence that in their new roles, they will continue to drive innovation and maintain the high standards of service that define our practice. We look forward to their continued contributions as they enter this next chapter of their careers."

Jakub has been with the Prague office of A&O Shearman (formerly Allen & Overy) since 2008. He has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions and has represented both buyers and sellers in domestic and cross-border transactions, particularly in the technology sector. He also specialises in intellectual property law, with a focus on the enforcement of industrial property rights, including patents, the enforcement of copyright in the online environment, protection against unfair competition, and artificial intelligence‑related matters. Jakub is regularly recognised in leading legal rankings, including Chambers Global, IFLR1000, WTR 1000 and Legal 500, confirming his strong position in the Czech market.

Martin joined the Prague office in 2013 and heads the Czech real estate practice. His work combines real estate and construction, mergers and acquisitions, and public procurement. He has advised on numerous significant transactions, including property acquisitions and disposals, development projects, forward‑sale structures, construction management agreements and tenancy arrangements. He also has extensive experience advising on PPP projects and tender procedures, including participation in a pilot PPP project in the Czech Republic. He is ranked by Legal 500 as a Leading Associate in the Real Estate and Construction category. In addition to his client work, Martin has long been engaged in pro bono activities, with a focus on the protection of minority rights and the promotion of inclusion.
