A&O Shearman advises KLM on its groundbreaking sustainable aviation fuel offtake with SkyNRG
A&O Shearman advises Dutch airline KLM on its first-of-its-kind sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) offtake and partnership arrangement with SkyNRG, a global leader in SAF. This transaction is the first sizable offtake and partnership arrangement in the emerging market of sustainable aviation fuel production. Through this arrangement, KLM is enabling SkyNRG to deliver one of the largest SAF projects in Europe.

This collaboration marks a major milestone for KLM in achieving its decarbonisation and sustainability goals in the Netherlands, Europe and globally, making KLM one of the first airlines in Europe to make such a substantial commitment towards developing the SAF sector.

Commenting on the partnership, KLM's CEO Marjan Rintel stated: “We are proud of our collaboration with SkyNRG, where, as co-founder and co-investor, we have been at the foundation of the first complete SAF factory in the Netherlands. With this factory, we are taking a concrete step to accelerate the production of SAF in the Netherlands so that we can strengthen our international leading position in the field of SAF.”

Alexander Chenery commented: “We are proud to have contributed to this landmark transaction, which represents a significant step towards KLM achieving its decarbonisation goals and a critical advancement of the sustainable aviation fuel sector in Europe. We are proud to have been able to galvanise our strong multidisciplinary and cross-jurisdictional capabilities to advise KLM across all aspects of this partnership with SkyNRG.”

The multi-jurisdictional A&O Shearman team was led by London-based partner Alexander Chenery and senior associate Marjet van Bezooijen from Amsterdam, assisted by Zeeger de Jongh, Cees van Ginneken, Eveline Jansen, and Simon Heerschop.
