Allen & Overy advises Greif on an innovative pilot-project with IonKraft to improve recyclability of industrial packaging
Industrial plastic packaging is highly recyclable, but certain applications that require barrier solutions can make recycling significantly more challenging. IonKraft has developed a game-changing coating technology that utilizes a plasma-enhanced vapor deposition process to create a strong barrier that is non-reactive, chemically inert, and 100% recyclable. Beyond recyclability, the IonKraft barrier technology offers a sustainable alternative to fluorination.
Dr Jens Matthes, IP partner at Allen & Overy and experienced advisor to cross-border industry collaborations, was the lead advisor to Greif and drafted and negotiated the complex collaboration agreement with IonKraft under which both companies intend to realize a pilot plant in Europe and to scale up the new technology, followed by a long-term supply relationship covering areas around the globe with certain preferential rights. “We are proud and happy that we have been able to support our client Greif in this project that improves sustainability and has the potential to enhance significantly the recyclability of certain special packaging that inevitably has to be made from plastic,” said Matthes. “This is another proof of our expertise in making complex and innovative projects possible and in bringing together diverse and international industry players for to enable future-oriented innovations.”
The Allen & Overy team consisted of partner Dr Jens Matthes and senior associate Anna Kräling (both IP, both Düsseldorf). Inhouse advice for Greif was given by Gary R. Martz, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, USA.
