Agustina Álvarez Olaizola

Agustina’s practice focuses on international arbitration, both treaty-based and commercial disputes, conducted in a variety of jurisdictions.
Her expertise extends to cases governed by the regulations of leading arbitral institutions, such as ICSID, UNCITRAL, and the ICC. She has experience representing a diverse array of clients, including multinational corporations, states, and State entities, across several industries, including energy, oil and gas, mining, transportation, and food manufacturing.
 
Agustina frequently advises investment funds on the purchase and sale of arbitration awards. She also advises States and corporations during the pre-contentious stages and settlement negotiations of complex cross-border disputes.
 

Experience

Representative matters

A dozen of ECT claims against the Kingdom of Spain (PV Investors, Eiser, RREEF, Antin, Masdar, RWE Innogy, Stadwerke München et al, Watkins, Sevilla Beheer et al., Infracapital, EBL and Canepa). The claims arise out of retrospective changes made by Spain to the regulatory investment framework governing the renewables sector.

The Republic of Peru in two related arbitration proceedings against The Renco Group, one treaty-based and one commercial, concerning a mining facility.

The China National Petroleum Corporation International in a dispute with a Latin American state concerning an oil refining facility.

 

 

 

 

Pro bono

Gentium on a joint program with the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE) in preparing a memorandum on human rights violations of rural workers in Spain.

The Human Rights Law Firm Association on the legal defense of displaced communities in Guatemala, recognised by the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice with its Award for Pro Bono Excellence.
