Senior Associate

Tom advises clients on all aspects of UK employment law.

With a particular interest in dispute resolution and litigation, Tom assists clients with workplace investigations, grievances, disciplinaries, new hires, terminations and settlements. Tom represents clients in complex and high-value Employment Tribunal, High Court, and Appellate Court proceedings, and particularly that relate to breach of contract, discrimination, whistleblowing, restrictive covenants and injunctions. Tom also counsels clients on strategic global projects, the employment law aspects of acquisitions, mergers and outsourcings, TUPE, FCA/PRA regulation (including the Senior Managers and Certification Regime and Remuneration Codes), and legal developments.

Tom also provides group-based and 1:1 workplace training on a range of hot topics, HR matters, and legal issues, including respect in the workplace, anti-harassment and bullying, sexual harassment, performance management, and other key concerns in the employment life cycle.

Tom works with employers of all sizes in a variety of sectors, and particularly in financial services, life sciences, technology, and sport.

Experience

Representative matters

  • A multinational telecommunications company in relation to claims of whistleblower detriment, disability discrimination and unfair dismissal brought by a former employee in the Employment Tribunal. This included landmark related proceedings in the Employment Appeal Tribunal and Court of Appeal regarding the extent of the Employment Tribunal’s powers under Rule 50 of the ET Rules of Procedure to restrict the disclosure of information in Tribunal proceedings.
  • Carrying out or advising on workplace investigations for a leading investment management company, including in relation to employee allegations of discrimination and bullying.
  • A global bank in relation to various Employment Tribunal claims, including claims alleging whistleblower detriment and discrimination.
  • An international financial services company in relation to the enforcement of post-termination restrictive covenants.
  • A service provider in the automotive services sector in relation to TUPE and redundancy-related claims brought by a trade union on behalf of several hundred employees in the Employment Tribunal.
  • Delivering conduct and dignity at work training to the workforce of a renowned motor racing team.
  • Delivering training to managers of a global biopharmaceutical company on the management of various employment life cycle matters, including the management of sickness absence, performance issues, and execution of disciplinary and grievance processes.

Pro bono

  • Advising the organisers of a sailing initiative, designed to promote the education and empowerment of girls worldwide, on seafarer employment agreements and related arrangements.
  • Advising a UK charity with operations overseas in relation to claims of unfair dismissal and discrimination brought by a volunteer in the Employment Tribunal.
