Lilian Welling-Steffens

Senior Knowledge Lawyer

Lilian advises on a broad range of (structured) finance and restructuring transactions and on property and insolvency law and private international law issues.
She has over 30 years of experience in both legal practice and academia in the Netherlands and further afield. Lilian will play a pivotal role in our European Finance and Restructuring network.

Lilian is also an Associate Professor of Private Law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU – Free University Amsterdam) with the same focus and frequently provides post academic courses in Finance & Security rights, Private International Law and Insolvency Law for Grotius and the VU Law Academy. She publishes frequently on the same.

Prior to joining A&O Shearman, Lilian worked as a lawyer and senior legal counsel for bureau Brandeis, Loyens & Loeff and Greenberg Traurig in Amsterdam, was Associate Professor of Private Law at the University of Amsterdam and lived and worked in Malawi for 9 years where, in addition to her appointment as Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Malawi and the University of Malawi, she also advised companies in the field of financing, insolvency and corporate law and was involved in the review of the new insolvency and personal security rights legislation in Malawi, both initiated by the World Bank. Lilian joined the firm in 2025.
