Karliana primarily acts for natural resources clients with a particular focus on oil and gas, mining and construction disputes.
Her experience has seen her deal with a diversity of complex matters both interstate and overseas, and across industries including natural resources, construction, financial services and insurance. This experience includes both litigation conducted in all Australian courts, as well as international arbitration proceedings under institutional rules.

Experience

Representative matters

  • Advising a multinational supermajor oil and gas company on eligibility of force majeure relief of Gas Sales Agreement arising from a failure of well facilities. 
  • Advising a large Australian mining contractor in relation to a dispute with the owner of a mine in Western Australia involving set-off for a payment claim for labour, overhaul and underhaul related costs. 
  • Advising an Indonesian energy company on a joint venture dispute regarding liability for abandonment costs in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Pro bono

  • Assisting an owner in negotiations with their builder where it attempted to assert an entitlement to onerously and substantially increase costs under a residential building contract based on increased supply costs due to Covid-19.
  • Providing pro bono advice to a client with disabilities regarding an appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal for access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
